Akira Toriyama’s passing in March 2024 at age 68 left a void in Japanese pop culture. Known worldwide for Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump, his work defined Shōnen Jump for decades. Yet before his rise, the magazine suffered a drought in anime adaptations. Toriyama’s arrival ended that curse, changing Jump’s future forever.
