Whenever Hollywood has a big hit on its hands that has franchise potential, the most common approach is for studios to fast-track sequels. This is done with the hope of capitalizing on audiences' interest before it fades or shifts to something else. Nowadays, if a sequel doesn't come out within three or four years of a success, it's believed that something is wrong.
