Garth Ennis' early 2000s Punisherrun remains the high bar for the notorious Marvel vigilante. No writer before or since has quite understood what makes Frank Castle a compelling character; there are plenty of good Punisher stories, sure, but greatness is another matter. Marvel has been chasing Ennis' success for 25 years now.
