In 1996, the X-Men crossed over with the Star Trek franchise, a move that was greeted with controversy. Star Trek fans believed the crossover would “sully” the franchise’s good name, and bring dishonor to Gene Roddenberry’s optimistic vision of humanity’s future. Despite the misgivings, Marvel pressed on, and the book arrived in stores that fall.
