The Prime Directive is a vital brick in the foundation of Star Trek mythology. Ultimately, the rule states that Starfleet cannot influence another population's development, which chiefly involves not making contact with societies yet to develop the warp technology needed to explore space for themselves. In very simple terms, "don't let the cave people see the giant starship."
