When the Sundance Film Festival was first introduced to the West, it was an infant needing the help of grownups to become fully realized. Its first edition, in 1978, included The Sweet Smell of Success(1957) and A Streetcar Named Desire (1951). Hardly new films. Legendary and important, to be sure, but not exactly the cinema's most cutting-edge work, over twenty years since those films had premiered.
