UC Santa Cruz physicist Stefano Profumo has put forward two imaginative but scientifically grounded theories that may help solve one of the biggest mysteries in physics: the origin of dark matter. In one, a hidden “mirror” universe with its own particles and forces could have created dense black hole–like objects in the early cosmos, making up all the dark matter we see today. The other theory suggests that dark matter might have been generated by quantum radiation at the universe’s edge during a rapid expansion shortly after the Big Bang.
